California Democrats boast that their state is a haven for abortion seekers and providers. But in one big way, abortion rights supporters concede that they’ve failed in the year since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
There are still more crisis pregnancy centers — which don’t offer abortions and often attempt to thwart patients’ efforts to obtain them — in California than clinics where people can terminate a pregnancy. Attorney General Rob Bonta is so alarmed by their proliferation that he issued a consumer alert about them last year, warning that they “may advertise a full range of reproductive health services” but “do not provide abortion or abortion referrals, and usually do not provide birth control or other forms of contraceptives.”
