State grant to improve safety near East Bay school

LAFAYETTE — Following the death of a crossing guard outside Stanley Middle School and increased awareness of the need to promote traffic safety, Lafayette officials have secured state money to design a path for students to make their way to Acalanes High School — an action that residents have asked for years.

When it’s done, the new pathway will provide people with a safe way to walk or bicycle around the school, especially during commute times, supporters say.

LOS ANGELES – Governor Gavin Newsom today announced the launch of the Governor’s Council on Holocaust and Genocide Education during a visit to the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. The newly created Council will be tasked with identifying instructional resources to teach students across California about the Holocaust and other acts of genocide and provide young people with the tools necessary to recognize and respond to on-campus instances of anti-Semitism and bigotry.

3,100-Acres Of Wilderness Preserved For New State Park

Thousands of acres of East Bay wilderness will be preserved as a new state park under a $33.2 million agreement reached last week between Gov. Gavin Newsom and the state legislature.

The 3,100-acre Tesla parcel in the southeast corner of Alameda County has several threatened and endangered species and is considered by scientists to be a biologically unique habitat. Native Americans consider the wilderness area as a historically sensitive site, according to a release from state Sen. Steve Glazer (D-Contra Costa) and Assembly Member Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (D-Orinda).

Region's first all-abilities playground opens in Dublin

Dublin achieved a major feat toward its goal of making city recreation facilities more accessible to all residents last week when it officially opened Imagine Playground, the Tri-Valley's first all-abilities playground.

Located at Dublin Sports Grounds on Dublin Boulevard and Civic Plaza, the $5.06 million project was unveiled at a grand-opening ceremony on March 6, where local officials and community members alike gathered to mark the occasion and appreciate the new facilities.
