Emergency Mental Health Response Town Hall

Throughout the last year, we have seen an overwhelming call for meaningful police and racial justice reform. While we have taken steps in the right direction, we have continued to fall short in making the necessary reforms especially as it pertains to how we handle those who are experiencing mental health crisis.

On Thursday, June 17th I’ll be joining the Beth Chaim congregation and the Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County for a Town Hall Event about my legislation, AB 988 – the Miles Hall Lifeline and Suicide Prevention Act.

AB 988 will transform the way the state responds to mental health emergencies. AB 988 will efficiently implement in California the new nationwide 988 Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Hotline created last year by the FCC and Congress. The new system will provide an alternative to 911 and help deploy mental health professionals in situations of mental health crisis –with coordination with public safety officials when appropriate. This bill will transform mental health emergency response and deliver appropriate care that addresses systemic inequalities.

Mental health and suicide crises are primarily seen as public safety threats rather than the medical health emergencies they are. Approximately, 25% of all individuals killed in police-involved shootings since 2015 had a known mental illness. We can’t continue to operate under the current status quo.

I hope that you’ll join us and learn more about how you can support this important legislation as we work to build a better world, in memory of those we’ve lost too soon.

Space is limited so please RSVP as soon as possible.
