Our first major summer heatwave is undoubtedly here. The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for the Bay Area through Wednesday. I wanted to share some helpful tips and resources to beat the heat:
- Never leave infants, children or the frail elderly unattended in a parked car.
- Drink plenty of fluids. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty.
- Dress in lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. Use a hat and sunscreen as needed.
- Drink fruit juice or a sports beverage to replace salts and minerals lost during heavy sweating.
- During the hottest parts of the day, keep physical activities to a minimum and stay indoors in air-conditioning and out of the sun.
- Use fans as needed.
- Open windows to allow fresh air to circulate when appropriate.
- Use cool compresses, misting, showers and baths.
- Eat frozen treats.
Heatstroke and heat exhaustion can come on suddenly and affects the young children and the elderly more acutely. During a heatwave, it is important to keep an eye out for symptoms of Heat Illness. I also encourage you to utilize cooling centers in and around the district.

Flex Alerts are often issued during heatwaves. Californians are urged to conserve electricity when the grid is most stressed by turning off unnecessary lights and avoid using major appliances during the hottest parts of the day. These actions help reduce the stress on our power grid and help protect against power interruptions.
